Butter chicken is a classic chicken dish which is prepared by adding butter, spices and other ingredients to the pieces of chicken.

While Indian restaurants in Sugarland, Texas abound with different kinds of meat items, butter chicken occupies one of the top spots on the list. The reason for this is not difficult to decipher, though.

Use the ingredients and follow the steps given below to prepare the palatable dish at home.


  • Raw chicken (700 grams)

For The Marinade

  • Red chilli powder (1 tsp)
  • Ginger and garlic paste (1 tsp)
  • Salt (as per taste)
  • Curd (1/2 kg)

For The Gravy

  • White butter (175 gram)
  • Black cumin seeds (1/2 tsp)
  • Pureed tomato (1/2 tsp)
  • Sugar (1/2 tsp)
  • Red chilli powder (1 tsp)
  • Salt (as per taste)
  • Fresh cream (100 gram)
  • Sliced green chillies (4)
  • Crushed Fenugreek leaves

Instructions to Prepare Butter Chicken

For The Marinade

  • Mix ginger garlic paste, red chilli powder, curd and salt in a mixing bowl.
  • Now, add the chicken pieces to the mixture and mix it well. Keep it in a fridge for at least 6 hours.
  • Roast the mixture on an oven or in a tandoor for about ten to twelve minutes. Before turning off the oven, make sure that it is cooked for at least 3-4 minutes.

For the Chicken Gravy

  • Put 85 grams of butter on a pan and heat it.
  • Add tomato puree to it and cook it for 2-3 minutes. Also, add red chilli powder, salt and cumin seeds and mix them well.
  • Now, pour some fresh cream, white butter, crushed fenugreek leaves and sliced green vegetables. Let the chicken cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • When the chicken is done, serve it hot with naan or rice.

Before serving it, do not forget to garnish the classic chicken dish with green chillies and cream.
